2016-05-15 – Forgiveness

Good Morning future adults of tomorrow!

I have a question for you. Have you every been angry at someone because of something they did to you or something that was yours? Please raise your hand if you have.

Were you angry with them for more than a day? (keep holding up hand)

How about more than a week? (keep holding up hand)

Back when I was about your age, I used to be in the Boy Scouts. We used to go on field trips where we would camp out in the woods for the weekend. Every time we did that, I had so much fun! We would set up our tents, roast marshmallows by the campfire that we built, climb trees and swing on vines. There was a stream nearby that we would play in as well.

We learned how to use maps and a compass to find our way around. We would sing songs by the campfire just before we went to bed, and warmed ourselves by the fire. We cooked our own food over the fire, and as young men often do, (whisper) we sometimes got into trouble. After it was over, I would think about it for weeks, and it would bring a smile to my face.

One time, I got everything ready to go on a trip, and I waited to be picked up by the Scout Master. I waited, and waited, and waited, and he never came. I waited for a phone call, but no one called. I was so sad. I thought they forgot me and went on the trip without me.

I became angry for days! Only later did I found out that they had canceled the trip, but they forgot to call my parents. Oh, if only I knew then what the Bible said about what I should have done. What should I have done instead?

(You should have forgiven them).

You are right! I should have forgiven them! The only person that suffered because I was angry was me! They didn’t even know that I was angry. We are so blessed that God forgives us of our sins, and He wants us to be like Him by forgiving others when they sin against us, whether by accident or on purpose.

Mark 11:25 says, “And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.”

I would encourage each of you, if you are angry about something that someone has done to you, to forgive them. If you can’t let go of your anger, ask your Father in Heaven to help you. This is something that He is more than happy to help you with.

Let’s pray.

Gracious and merciful Father in Heaven, we are so happy that you forgive us when we sin against you. We have been so blessed that you can take away our anger and replace it with compassion towards those who harm us. Give us a greater sense of your love for us that we may love those in the same way who have sinned against us. Grant us mercy this day for our sins, for we have sinned against you O God. Be merciful to us, and Lord God, teach us to be merciful to others. This we ask and pray in the character of your Son, Jesus Christ, Amen.
